There’s Hope After A Relapse
If you're reading this because you've relapsed, I want you to know something. This doesn't have to be the end of your story. I know what it's like to fall back into addiction after promising myself I'd never go back. I know how hard it is to face what happened and find the courage to start again.
But I've also learned that one setback doesn't erase everything God has been doing in your life. Jesus hasn't turned His back on you, and you don't have to stay where you are. There's still hope. There's still grace. And with God's help, you can take that next step toward recovery.
Relapse can leave you wondering where to go from here. I want to share a few things I've learned through my own recovery that might help you take that next step.
What Do I Do Now?
Turn to Jesus.
Don't let what happened keep you from God. Talk to Him. Be honest about where you are and ask Him for the strength to begin again. You don't have to find the perfect words. He already knows your heart.
Don't isolate yourself.
Reach out to someone you trust. Whether it's a sponsor, pastor, counselor, or someone in your recovery community, let somebody know you're struggling. We weren't meant to walk through recovery alone.
Take responsibility without giving up.
Be honest with yourself about what happened. Think about what led to the relapse and what needs to change moving forward. You can't undo yesterday, but you can make a different choice today.
Get the help you need.
Sometimes getting back on track means returning to meetings, seeking counseling, or entering treatment. If you're physically dependent on alcohol or certain drugs, seek medical guidance before stopping suddenly. Asking for help isn't a lack of faith.
Keep moving forward.
Your relapse doesn't have to define you. Learn from what happened, lean on Jesus, and take recovery one day at a time. You don't have to figure out your entire future today. Just take the next right step.
I want you to know that I've relapsed too, and I remember how ashamed I felt afterward. I was disappointed in myself, and it was hard to admit that I'd fallen again. But something I've learned through my relationship with Jesus is that the shame I was carrying wasn't coming from Him. God doesn't shame me or turn His back on me when I stumble. He lovingly calls me to repentance, helps me face what I've done, and gives me the strength to get back up. If you've relapsed, please don't let shame keep you from reaching for His hand. He's still there.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” Romans 8:1 (NIV)
A Prayer After Relapse
Heavenly Father,
I come to You knowing I've stumbled again. Lord, help me let go of the shame I've been carrying and remember that Your grace is greater than my mistakes. Give me the courage to be honest, the strength to make better choices, and the willingness to accept the help I need. Thank You for loving me even when I fall short.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
