“nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:10 (NIV)
Tonight at Bible study my pastor talked about drunkenness. This verse stood out to me because alcohol has become such a big part of my own story. For years, drinking was how I escaped. I knew alcohol was causing problems in my life, but I kept going back to it.
Even after I gave my life to Jesus I struggled with relapse. I loved God, but there was still a part of my life I hadn’t completely surrendered to Him. This verse can sound harsh, especially when you’ve struggled with alcohol like I have. But after our study ended tonight, I read further on and noticed something beautiful in the next verse.
“And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:11 (NIV)
I love the words “And that is what some of you were.” God wasn’t telling me the truth about my drinking because He wanted to condemn me. He wanted me free from something that had controlled me for far too long.
My recovery hasn’t been perfect. I’ve fallen and gotten back up. But alcohol no longer gets to me. Jesus does.
The message I received tonight would’ve had a much different effect on me even a few months ago, but tonight I am grateful for a sober mind. One that was able to look at the next verse and see hope instead of condemnation. I’m learning that when God shows me something that needs to change, He isn’t shaming me, He is continuing to draw me closer to Him.
Thank you, Pastor, for an enlightening Bible Study.
