I think about the woman I used to be,
And sometimes I wish that she could see
The life I have, the peace I’ve found,
And how Jesus turned my whole world around.
She was a woman who had lost her way,
Who woke up promising to change each day. She meant those promises, every single one,
But by the time the night came, the damage was done.
She hurt the people she loved the most,
Chasing things that left her feeling lost.
She looked in the mirror and hated what she’d see,
Wondering what had happened to the woman she used to be.
She tried to get sober more times than I can count,
And every time she fell, the shame would mount.
She wanted to stop, but didn’t know how,
And couldn’t imagine the life I’m living now.
There were nights she cried and begged to be free,
Not knowing that Jesus was waiting patiently.
She thought she’d gone too far, made too many mistakes,
And didn’t know how much more her heart could take.
But Jesus didn’t wait until she cleaned up her life,
He met her right there in the middle of her strife.
He didn’t ask her to explain where she’d been,
He opened His arms and welcomed her in.
And slowly, the woman she was began to change,
The things she once wanted no longer felt the same.
Not because she suddenly got everything right,
But because she finally let Jesus into her life.
I still remember the things that I’ve done,
The people I’ve hurt, the years I can’t outrun.
I can’t go back and make those years disappear,
But I know that Jesus has forgiven me here.
And sometimes I wish I could hold that woman tight,
Tell her she doesn’t have to keep losing the fight.
Tell her that one day she’ll finally be free,
And become the woman God created her to be.
I used to look back at her with nothing but shame,
But Jesus has taught me to see her a different way.
She was broken, she was lost, but she was still me,
And she was always someone God could redeem.
So I won’t pretend that she never existed,
Or forget all the times that she struggled and resisted.
Because when I look at the woman I used to be,
I see just how far Jesus has carried me.
And if there’s one thing I wish she could know,
It’s that God never stopped loving her, even at her lowest low.
The woman I used to be is part of my story,
But the woman I’m becoming belongs to His glory.
