Have you ever been having a good day and out of nowhere something from your past pops into your head? Maybe it's something you said, something you did, or a decision you wish you could go back and change. Before you know it, you're thinking about things you haven't thought about in years, and all those old feelings of guilt and shame start creeping back in.
I know that feeling all too well. There are plenty of things in my past that I'm not proud of. I've made mistakes, hurt people I love, and made decisions that I wish I could take back. And even though I know Jesus has forgiven me, there are still times when those memories come back and try to convince me that I'm the same person I used to be.
But I'm not that person anymore, and that's something I have to remind myself of sometimes.
The enemy would love nothing more than to keep us focused on everything we've done wrong. He wants us to believe that our mistakes are too big, that we've messed up too many times, or that God couldn't possibly use someone with a past like ours. And if we're not careful, we can spend so much time looking backward that we forget what God is doing in our lives right now.
Romans 8:1 tells us, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." (NIV)
I love that verse because it doesn't say there's no condemnation as long as we've never made a mistake. It doesn't say we have to earn God's forgiveness by being good enough. Jesus already paid the price for our sins when He died on the cross. When we repent and give our lives to Him, we are forgiven.
That doesn't mean the things we've done don't matter or that there aren't consequences for our choices. Believe me, I know there are. But it does mean that we don't have to spend the rest of our lives punishing ourselves for things God has already forgiven.
For a long time, I thought my past was something I needed to be ashamed of and keep hidden. I never imagined that one day I'd be sharing those very things with other people. But God has a way of taking the parts of our lives we wish we could erase and using them to reach someone who needs to know they're not alone.
I can't go back and change the things I've done. I can't get those years back, and I can't undo every mistake. But I can keep following Jesus and allow Him to change the way I live today. I'm still learning, still growing, and still making mistakes. The difference is that I don't have to face any of it without Him.
So when those old memories come creeping back in, I try to remember that the enemy doesn't get to tell me who I am anymore. Jesus does. And if you've given your life to Him, the same is true for you.
Maybe you've made some terrible decisions. Maybe you've hurt people, lost relationships, or wasted years doing things you wish you'd never done. I understand that more than you know. But please don't let the shame of yesterday keep you from seeing what God can do with your tomorrow.
The enemy may know your past, but he doesn't get to write the rest of your story.
God isn't finished with you yet.
